This is an interesting question and one as a fan of the show I have asked myself. First off I would say if Colbert were answering this question himself he would state that his show is strictly for entertainment. He cannot however deny that there is a young audience hanging on his every word and the things he says will have an impact on the beliefs that the viewers hold. Then there comes the danger of soundbite media without properly looking at the entire picture of a story. Also something to consider is the role satire has to play in the grand social scheme of things. One thing about this show and other media like it not just on comedy central but main stream media as well, is the reactionary nature and the negative aspect of it. I would be the first one to say that a true patriot is someone who takes the position of dissent, but there has to be some sort of constructive aspect to ones views if they are to contribute to the conversation.
