There's a race to the bottom common denominator going on in popular culture - just watch prime time NBC on a weeknight to experience it. The closest thing I can equate it to is the story in "Brave New World." I don't think it is on purpose, it's just part of the human condition. It's easy and addicting - like High Fructose Corn Syrup. The Media giants are just doing what is easy to increase profits next quarter. The next effect, however, is scary. Our response? We homeschool.
I am a classically-traine mathematician who went into software development right out of university. My wife has a degree in philosophy from an ivy-level school. I've spent the last ten years developing software, increasingly focusing on writing and speaking (and doing) software testing. I am completely struck by the mismangement of knowledge work in North America, the creation of McJobs, the disconnect of the "whole person" from the work, and the lack of thinking in general. 1984 may not have happened, but we are certainly closer to "brave new world" than I would prefer. I am increasingly moved to do something about it; my current thought is to impact university education. I begin teaching Comptuer Science part time at Calvin College in the fall of 2008.
