Corporations can do social good, but it is done when there is some advantage to it, whether it be profitable, good public relations, or part of some long term strategy. Problems arise when a corporation finds itself in a situation where acting socially irresponsible is in the best interest of its owners. This is the challenge of corporate social responsibility. This challenge stems from the fact that corporations are social constructs designed to coordinate efforts that benefit their owners (in many cases, their stock holders). Those that run corporations must, by law, act in the best interest of the owners. One cannot design a construct around one set of ideas, and expect it to function along another.
