Maria Garcia-Reyes commented on How Do You Succeed In Business During a Recession? on June 12, 2009, 12:44 PM

His points about leadership cannot be overstated. It is up to the business leaders today to instill confidence in their workforce. I heard a great quote that makes sense for leaders, no matter what the economic condition, which is really similar to what he said: Imagine the world as you would have it be, and work to make it so. Even still however, it can be difficult for leaders to say, as he suggests, that they want "you" there with me - espeically when layoffs are happening all around us.

Maria Garcia-Reyes commented on Lenny Mendonca: How Can You Make The Most Of Technological Revolution? on June 12, 2009, 12:31 PM

Mendoca brought up Yelp and YouTube as examples of companies that empower individuals to be more involved in the community - large or small - around them. But from what I understand many brands do not have good relationships with these two entities. Advertisers tend to be fearful of YouTube. Actually adverising through the system is risky because brands cede almost all power to the user generating the content - and who knows what they are going post! As for Yelp! I've heard that many establishments really dislike the lack of power they have over negative reviews. Sure, I assume that there are certainly poor reviews that are well deserved - but I understand the places reaction to one-off poor comments that can drive traffic away.

Maria Garcia-Reyes commented on Jim Spanfeller Lobbies for the New Entrepreneur Class on June 12, 2009, 12:23 PM

I really enjoyed what Spanfeller said about big companies continuing to learn - especially from small companies. As it is only through learning that old companies are able to survive through reinvention. It's a strange example, but his comment made me think about bands and musicians that have been innovative and who have survived the test of time. The first that come to mind are The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Both of them went through massive change throughout their musical careers and also periods of intense personal discovery and learning.

Maria Garcia-Reyes commented on Notes the New Economy’s Dynamism on June 12, 2009, 12:10 PM

Karim raises an interesting point about trying to look at solutions for softening fincial system corrections in the future. I see that as the role of the regulatory bodies in the government - the Fed, congress, the SEC, etc. in putting in the correct restrictions and regulations. Business, as always, is going to go where the money is - and go there quickly - as well they should. Of course business should consider the ramifications of their actions when looking at new financial models - but really I put the blame on Alan Greenspan and the deregulation in the 1980s. The regulation - while it did slow down the speed of the economy - was there for a reason!

Maria Garcia-Reyes commented on Thomas Cooley: Will Big Government Change The Rules Of Commerce? on June 12, 2009, 11:57 AM

I don't have trouble, in the same way that Cooley does, with government proping up financial and business insitutions in a time of crisis. In times of market failures society still depends on certain types of insitutions to function - and if the firms fail society at large is left with a large problem on thier hands. Instead, it makes sense for government to give some support to keep things functioning. Of course no insitution is too big to fail. Just think of the Titanic. But that doesn't mean that the government should not have sent out rescue ships...
