I was deeply impressed at discovering the -unfinished- work of Lev Vygotski and the power of his core thesis: language is mind is language. This is truly an empowering concept.

My favorite novel is Memoirs of Hadrian, by Marguerite Yourcenar. It deals, among many other things, with aging, with physical and emotional decrepitude and pain. This, make no mistake, is to be feared for good reason. All else about death can be accepted.

I think we have lost our greatest freedom, to put an end to life when our conversation bores even our best friends (I love this quote from classic Roman literature). In the past free men and women would gather the counsel of family and friends when they believed life was no longer enjoyable and lacked human dignity. After talking and listening to counsel, often friends and family would agree on the principle of dignity, gave a farewell and stood there in the final moment. This freedom has been lost.
