Of course journalists have an impact on readers, and when they cease to do so will be the true end to journalism. Yes, sometimes it is the smile on the ride home - - but other times it is the story that jolts us awake, and we are informed in a new way, or about something we never knew. Without my daily doses of news, I would have been a narrower and more parochial thinker.
