Lee Bob Black commented on The Case Against Microfinance Loans on September 16, 2009, 2:02 PM
Just saw a video on the net where Josh Ruxin talks about MF.In my view you have missed the most important thing which is about access to banks designed for the poor. You give voice to a very traditional aid philosopy (which in my view includes Kiva). Our western societies would never be where we are today without a financial sector where everyone (more or less) have access to financial services. To achieve that we don´t need people in the west extending small loans. We need reseponsible investors to build and develop an inclusive financial sector.Kind regards Lars-Olof HellgrenCEONordic Microcap Investment(an investor in microfinance in Africa)
Lee Bob Black commented on Dev Patnaik: Obama is America’s Chief Empathy Officer on August 20, 2009, 2:18 PM
At the end of this interview segment with Dev Patnaik, he mentions: "What it really means is just the intuitive ability to connect with other people, and Barack gets that. I think he’s leading us to a different place. It’s a sign of Obama’s ability to connect with people that we don’t call him President Obama. We call him Barack. The people I know refer to him by his first name like he’s one of us." I just read another example of someone calling President Obama by this first name. In a January 29, 2008, Big Think interview with John Legend, the American singer/songwriter says: "You have to somewhat rely on the kind of judgment you think they have as a person, and the kind of integrity they have, and what their moral compass is. And I honestly believe when it comes to that criteria, Barack is clearly the most qualified to be president."
Lee Bob Black commented on Will You Boycott Whole Foods? on August 18, 2009, 10:46 AM
Regarding boycotting Whole Foods, Reverend Billy has been calling on consumers to boycott the Union Square store, in Manhattan. On the activist's website (www.RevBilly.com), in the Union Square Not For Sale page, he writes that the campaign "was launched in response to massive renovation of Union Square Park [that includes] plans for a private, for-profit restaurant in the historic Northside Pavilion which was originally built as a parade stand and later used as a year round recreational shelter for women and children. The pavilion stands at the center of may of this country’s most important social movements, abolition, suffragette, civil rights and especially labor." In the "Things You Can Do" section, he writes: "Boycott Whole Foods, Barnes and Noble, Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Café."
