There is a great book on evolutionary psychology that talks about "human nature" the fact that we are still animals driven by properties of our species. Its called "Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters"

This is interesting, I almost understand it! In science and engineering so much money is funneled to military applications one often has to prove some sort of connection to usefulness for military with one’s research (in the U.S.). an agricultural scientist has to prove the research will help agribusiness make money cause they have to look to agribusiness for funding. So in general I see the gridlock at the of the people doling out the funds although they are no the ones with the creativity and imagination.
