Brian, I agree in that race, class and gender are not guarantees of diversity of ideas but you must admit that at a nonspecific level they are a decent proxy. For example, I think you will agree with me that in general, it is more likely that one of your female friends (assuming you are a guy) has a different perspective of life from you than one of your male friends. The same goes for rich and middle-class people. For example, when it comes to economic policy, the rich will always argue that lowering the taxes on the rich will have a net benefit in the economy, as rich people are more likely to re-invest their tax savings, thus adding fuel to the economy. On the other hand, middle-class people will rightly feel at a disadvantage and would never approve this thought.. So, while race, class and gender may not be the %u201Cperfect%u201D proxies of diversity, I think we must not discriminate against the use of them with blind eyes.
