The pack. The tribe. The village. I've seen that people often play favorites for their tribe — and it causes much harm when a "level playing field" isn't valued for their neighbors, coworkers and fellow citizens. It beats people down and dis-incentivises them, forcing them to align with a pack in self defense. That's often the cause of burnout in activists who are working for the good of a larger society.
