Jonathan Evans commented on Sam Harris Says Religion Can be a Force for Good on April 7, 2009, 12:23 AM

I don't think the 'elitist atheist' remark was meant to imply that atheists believe that humanity itself is the focal point of the universe. The stereotype does however paint atheists as elitist in that the most vocal of the group tend to view all theists as unenlightened and inherently stupid. Personally, I see as much arrogance in claiming that a 'creator' definitely does not exist then in claiming that a creator definitely does exist. It seems to me that in relation to Mr. Harris' piece, the world would be better off if more people were willing to examine what various religions have to offer, form your own opinions, believe if and as you please but acknowledge the very real possibility that you may be way the hell off.

If you follow that reasoning you come to this: if we were in fact created by a higher being, who created said higher being? I happen to believe in a creator as well, but your logic is shaky. You ask 'where does that dot come from?' but it has to start somewhere. Maybe God and the Point of Origin are one in the same.

I'm not exactly capital 'c' Christian, so I hope you don't object to me putting my two cents in.That being said, it's impossible to determine how much was lost and how much addled between all the years and translations since the Old Testament's creation. Especially with something as exact and specific as a number. Now, assuming they are the right numbers, and taking it from a Christian point of view, it shouldn't be that hard to believe. The people in the passages you are referring to are the (relatively) early decedents of Adam and Eve - beings originally intended to be immortal, right? If we say /this/ is in fact true, it's not really very far-fetched to assume their offspring led much longer lives than we do, is it?

Re: Re: Is there a possibility of a creator?

Mr. Harris makes some good points, but I don't see it disproving the possibility of a creator. It's true that between the many different religions, there exist contradictions. It does in fact seem like we're all going to somebody's hell. However, if you ignore the individual institutions and just look at the question as 'is there a creator or not?’ there is as much evidence supporting this claim as there is refuting it (which is to say: very little). I look at things like the eye, and other complex systems essential to life on our planet and it's easy for me to imagine a sentient hand behind it all.    … Read More
