We appear to be in this open-ended war in Iraq and depending on who is elected President, we could have troops there for years, if not decades.  Since we also have troops in Afghanistan, I'm reminded of what happened to the Soviet Union after spending a large amount of money in Afghanistan.  Does the United States face something similar by remaining in Iraq with borrowing money from other nations (i.e., China) and by not having a set goal that equates victory?

The Iraq war and the Afgan war is earilly similar. And Iraq has already ened up being the “bleading wound” that Afgan was for the soviets. It is imposible to bring a country under your control unless you have support from the populace, otherwise they will fight you no mater how many people they loose, its their country they have nowere to go. You would think that the soviets would have learned this lesson in Afgan, and one would assume that the US should have learned it in vietnam. But what do you know, Russia is bleading in Chechnya, and the US is bleading in Iraq. There is only one posoble outcome, eventually the beleading wound will start hurting to much and we will have to leave.
