Huge question Dr. Doom, and probably one that only future generations will have an adequate ability to measure. One thing is for certain: the globe is currently in the vice grips of absolute capitalist ideology. This worldview so thoroughly permeates our systems that it cannot help but be the lens through which we view all matters. Relationships, religion, education--these are... investments. If there is any paradise, it is but a profit, a final dividend, a bonus to one's portfolio. (See Jonathon Franzen's "The Corrections" for an excellent satire of the mindset")What is particularly disturbing is how capitalism colludes with technology to coerce individual compliance: we must constantly update ourselves, equip ourselves with the latest gadgets, etc., lest we become uncompetitive, useless--unproductive, and we are told, purposeless in the global economy. Is this truly the meaning of life? Is this the sum of our wisdom, the fruit our great Enlightenment? My gut feeling, in spite of all the wondrous statistics of growth, and the great gains in the gadget department (this website too, yes, I'll admit) is that this does not bode well for the human spirit, the ecosphere, or a sincere measure of freedom.

This is great. Deepak kinda looks like he had a hard night drinking. Sage as ever, but not quite the radiant yogi voice that comes through on his audiobooks, or the California incarnation beaming from the glossy booksleeves of his latest bestsellers.
