Re: When did you become conscious of race?

Kept ignorant and raised in a mostly white community, it wasn't until my mid-teens that I became aware of race.  to be quite frank, I'm a little pissed off at my parents for that!  I went through social mishaps and personal conclusions that should have been resolved way earlier in life.  It's quick to think others as ignorant or different due to race... and it often takes a great deal of effort and realization to see otherwise.  I am very sorry for those I've hurt in the past with my words or actions and hope that society as a whole wakes up and sees the harm they are doing!!!

I can easily see how racism is born and kept alive today... it's partly because of hateful people that are using race as a form of releasing their anger, but I think it is mostly due to pure ignorance and lack of caring.  Is a kind soul born or cultivated?

Re: When did you become conscious of race?
I grew up in a fairly small, segregated town in west central Missouri.  The elementary school I attended didn't have any students or teachers of color until about 1970.  The first African-American children that I met was when I played Little League baseball around 1967 - I noticed that some adults referred to them as either "colored" or "negro" kids.  It was in the late 60's when an interracial couple were married and bought a house in an all-white neighborhood - many adults seemed to be appalled.
