Exploring the Shipwrecks of Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay

The website for the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary features an terrific interactive exploration of the region's many wrecks.

If you’re at all interested in shipwrecks, you have to visit the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary website. There, you’ll find a fully interactive collection of photos, video, trivia, and 3D underwater maps. The site features over 50 ships currently sleeping with the fishes in the Thunder Bay region of Lake Huron off the northeastern Michigan coast. Pictured above is the amusingly-named Typo, a 137-footer that sank in 1899.


With two-hundred years worth’ of wrecked vessels, the lake bottom is a veritable graveyard for commercial vessels. You can explore it here.
