Interview Transcript

Dalia Mogahed: What each person should be doing is really, like I said, the idea of introspection; of really doing the inner work of re-examining who we are and who we want to be. And then working toward living out those values in our everyday life. I think that just that process can collectively make the world much better.

He wants to change the incentives that some people experience.

They are the people who set the incentives for each other :-(

If people want a doorstop to read, they could consider “The New Spirit of Capitalism” by Boltanski and Chiapello. I don’t know how to summarise it.

I agree with Dalia that “Introspection is key” both from my personal experience and my observations.

One of my more thoughtful friends identifies himself on his blog as writer/thinker.  Someone remarked that the label writer/thinker is"ostentatious."  I don’t understand the label that way.  I see it as an accurate description of my friend and how he views his work.

Most of what is available for reading in our daily lives was not given much thought before it was written.  Ad campaigns may have been given ‘thought’ but not introspection, unfortunately the purpose of ads is manipulation.

And thinking doesn’t get much respect.  Even Mark Twain was criticized for being ‘lazy’ by one of his neighbors.  Many of us respect that he wrote thoughtfully on many subjects to enlighten and entertain us.

Thinking, introspection: I highly recommend!
