45 - Tatooine, Luke Skywalker's Home Planet

Tatooine is a (fictional) desert planet in the Star Wars saga, circling two suns and circled by three moons and home to the Skywalker family. The planet is one of the most iconic of the saga, mentioned in all six movies so far. Tatooine harbors about 200.000 inhabitants, and was for a long time controlled by Jabba, a member of the criminal race of Hutts.

The largest settlement on the planet is the spaceport Mos Eisley, other towns are the nominal capital Bestine, the town of Anchorhead, Tosche Station, Mos Entha, Wayfar and Mos Espa.Apart from the human settlers, Tatooine is home to two native humanoid species: the Jawa (pygmy-like scavengers) and the Sand People (hostile recluses). Both species wear fully concealing robes, hiding their true forms. It’s vaguely hinted that both species share a common ancestor – indeed, that they are both descended from humans, who might have originated on Tatooine.

The planet once had oceans and jungles, but was transformed into desert after an attack by the Rakata, who ‘glassed’ the planet. Some places and regions on Tatooine:

The Dune Sea: a huge sandy desert, inhabited by Sand People (also known as Tusken Raiders), Jawas and other species. Home to Obi-Wan Kenobi after the destruction of the Jedi
Temple.

The Great Pit of Carkoon: located within the Dune Sea, this pit was created by the Sarlacc, a large omnivore that uses the pit to capture prey.

Jabba’s Palace: located in the Dune Sea.

Jundland Wastes: a rocky region occupying most of Tattoine’s temperate area, home to most of Tatooine’s native species, such as Banthas, Dewbacks and Krayt Dragons.

Moisture farms: small farms in the desert that use moisture collecting devices to harvest water from the air. Luke Skywalker lived on one of these farms.

Mos Eisley: a spaceport annex cantina, described as ‘a wretched hive of scum and villainy’.

Mos Espa: a city with ‘desert-proof’ domed buildings, home to a podracing track and of Anakin and Shmi Skywalker.

Tosche Station: a general store in the city of Anchorhead, selling a variety of goods.

Interesting trivia on the naming of Tatooine: George Lucas initially intended to name the planet Utapau, but eventually named it after the actual name of the film location in
Tunisia, spelled Tataouine in French.
