A new digital front in health monitoring, 'wireless body area networks' assign I.P. addresses to an individual's organs which are then linked to mobile devices such as smart phones. Any sudden change in the behavior of an organ, such as a spike in heart rate or blood pressure, will be related to the mobile device so that the individual can take appropriate action. The mobile devices will also be connected directly to physicians, enabling a more rapid response in the case of catastrophic health failure. The technology currently being developed in the U.K. will be presented this week at the Wireless Health Conference in San Diego, California.
