In Egypt, euphoria over Mubarak's ousting in February later gave way to a creeping realization that the regime had not been toppled at all. Egypt has always defied tidy theories, and the complexity of the political machinations has overwhelmed analysis. But the desire for a fair and representative government remains a constant.

What's the Big Idea?

As for the election outcome, the final vote will not be tallied until January.
