July 2015: Long-Lost Dr. Seuss Book to be Published

A long-lost, completed manuscript belonging to famous children's author Ted Geisel — better known as Dr. Seuss — is scheduled for release in July 2015.

A long-lost, completed manuscript belonging to famous children’s author Ted Geisel — better known as Dr. Seuss — is scheduled for release in July 2015. Characteristically titled What Pet Should I Get?, the book chronicles the childhood experience of getting a first pet.

The narrative of the story follows a brother and sister, the same pair Geisel established in One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, as they decide which animal will best suit them.

In 2013, the manuscript was unearthed in the California home of the late author by his widow, Audrey Geisel, and the couple’s longtime secretary and friend Claudia Prescott. The two had originally found the manuscript in a box filled with pages of text and sketches back in 1991, shortly after the writer’s death.

“While undeniably special, it is not surprising to me that we found this because Ted always worked on multiple projects and started new things all the time — he was constantly writing and drawing and coming up with ideas for new stories,” said Mrs. Geisel.

At least two more books are expected to be published from the same materials found in the box, though details including the titles of the books have not been released.

This year marks the 25 anniversary of the last book Geisel published under the name Dr. Seuss: Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Originally Geisel had studied for a Ph.D. in English literature at Oxford University in the UK, before being persuaded by fellow writer and his future wife Helen Palmer to abandon his academic career and move to the United States.

During Big Think’s interview with then-Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, he discussed what makes his grade for underrated, overrated, and timeless poetry. We have no doubt he would put Dr. Seuss in the immortal category.
