A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

“Having a boss or co-worker who’s a bully not only makes your life miserable, but it can also make you sick. Luckily, I’ve found a new book that might help you cope,” says Sara Altshul of Health.com. She says that new research has found that 10 per cent of nearly 8,000 office workers surveyed in France had been “victimized” by an office bully. Another study of nurses at Boston College found that more than two-thirds of the 303 questioned had experienced “on-the-job public humiliation”. So what’s the solution? Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job is a new book by Lynn Taylor. Altshul recommends it for giving advice on “reinforcing good behaviour” in your boss, “learning their triggers” and “making it fun” – all tactics Taylor learned off her two small boys.
