History before History

Generally, contempary beliefs of the history of humanity imagine the beginning of our civilisation to have began around 6000 - 10'000 years ago. Can we deny the possibility of there having been past civilisations on the earth? Cultural folklore, religious text from all over the world, and ancient beliefs all speak of something long before any thing that we may archaeologically know of now. Are we really the first ones?
