The speaker didn’t address merit pay; too bad. The Merit pay of the CEOs etc who orchestrated the financial meltdown has been much in the news; one would think there would be some soul searching about just where was the “Merit”, and some observations about how “political” and selfserving it all was. And is. As for teachers, for some reason there seems little scepticism about the fairness and rationality of the teaching administrations use of “Merit” pay; it is far from a given that the most deserving teachers would get it. As for his comment about the teachers he had in the day, I can only say I don’t think that the promotion of teachers to being lawyers, CEOs, business leaders, etc. is a cause for celebration at all. It’s a net for society . Pay them, fine. disigny
