In the last 50 years (my lifetime) the population of the world has more than doubled from 3 billion to 6.5 billion, and by the time my children are around my age in 2040 the population will reach 9 billion or more. We cannot agree to feed 1 billion people now, and as oil-subsidised food declines and food prices rise, how will we take responsibility for another 3 billion people to feed? What do you think we can we do to limit population?

At the risk of sounding heartless, I think Mother Nature is doing a good job of cleansing herself lately.

Why should we try to limit our population? The sky is limitless. As we develop the need for more space and more resources we will find them. First, our budding global community must learn to make better use of what we have.

people come and people go, its worked so far and i think thats the way it should stay. i think population control is a bad idea for america. we tend to take it overboad.

Well, I think that the increasing population, with the amount of land same in someplaces and in others dwindling(with possible slowly rising shores), over time will present struggles in the future. I also think that with struggle, brings triumph, especially technologies that have already been made available. And I do agree(not wanting to sound unsympathetic) if we do not learn to not take Earth for granted, then nature will fix the problem for us and it will not be pretty.

For starters, a convicted death row inmate is just that condemned to death. Kill him already. Why does society have to feed and house him five, ten, even fifteen years after a person has been convicted. Another way would be to defend the right of women to have abortions. If the woman doesnt want her kid, and society cant find a home for the kid, the kid usually ends up a statistic. I am by no means saying all orphans are murderers, but absence of family seems to be a contributor to some teens behavior. Another method could be sterilization for certain males that cannot even take care of the kids that they do have.

i think population control would have a positive effect on America. if people realized that having this life was a privilege perhaps they would value it more.

I would agree with what skearn1 said. We must localize our economy however continue to participate intellectually in the global community.

i believe the planet will balance itself out if it passes the limit be it a natural disaster or result of such a large population

We are now seeing food riots in parts of the world. In the US, Costco and Sam’s Club are limiting the amount of certain rices, although I’m not sure how many people need to buy over 80 pounds of rice per day/visit. Nations are preventing and diverting the flow of rivers. We are (or at least we should) trying to develop energy sources to meet the growing world demands.

How many cities in the world are on or near fault lines, volcanoes, or are subject to massive disasters, such as hurricanes?

Look at http://visz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?lang=eng – it shows various events that occurring.

There have been prolonged droughts in various parts of the world. We use a lot of resources to create various parts of our food supplies – either by shipping, deforestation, the use of synthetic and petroleum based fertilizers with little regard to the damage that it might cause.
