I believe that our founding fathers would find some things to be proud of but mostly they would be horrified by those citizens who believe that this country was founded as and is a "Christian" nation. It was clearly their desire and intent to found a "secular" nation. It seems to me that many American citizens, especially the evangelical and fundamentalist Christians, are quite ignorant of this and choose to believe that somehow a religious (Christian) focused govenment was what was desired by men like Monroe, Jefferson, Adams, etc.

Yes, they would definitely refute the claim that we were to be a “Christian Nation” by law – but definitely not by principle and moral virtue. Thomas Jefferson considered himself a “deist,” but he still attended church. What they would be horrified about is how much ilberty and sovereignty the states have today, and how incredible large and powerful the Federal Government is.
