Cody POWPOW commented on is swearing wrong? on February 9, 2008, 4:58 AM

This is rather funny because i had the same converseation just a few days ago. So basically there are 2 types of swereing... which are really the same!!! i would say they are blasphemy and explicitive!!! and really they r used in the same context. When one uses a word or a sound to express hurt or surprise or anger the explicitve is the word, and the sound itself dosent matter the intent does!!! if i stub my toe and yell Dang!!! it really no different then yelling Shit or fuck or dam... they al express the same feeling and idea the word only takes on the meaning we ascribe to it!!!CP

well first of all i dont think you are crazy for your beliefs, we all have them and we all need to know the reality of our own situations... however i do think that ignoring the well founded science that supports issues such as the age of the earth or evolution is slightly ignorant (scientific theory carries way more weight then notions of a young earth)...I would like you to still defend the question i posed to you... what exactly overlaps on these issues? The fact that the OT suppots points like i presented means that that they need to be defended against what has arisin since then. Slavery as depicted in the OT was by no means an indentured serventude, it was for life!!! In fact the childen of slaves were born into slavery!!!. In fact if you read books that document early x-ian hist you will learn that in the early days they took slaves like the romans..FOR LIFE!!! and they didn't treat them all that well... HOWEVER... my question to you was how do you view the OT??? and how do you defend the passages i chose to present to you? if you choose to brush these particular passages off i would be glad to present more that i take issue with. So please defend your position of the OT and address all the issues i brought up... slavery is just one and i honestly think that you are wrong in you view of it as just a mild (treated better.) form of indenture servitude. so please defend you view with some real evidence or referece.Cheers: CP

hey thatguy,I know this is a little off topic but id like to jump back to issues of the old testament. i understand if you have strong faith in the OT and from many of your postings it seems your faith is sideing with some very literal interpretations. For example your questions regarding the notion that Noah was several hundred years old, or the 7 day creation or a 6000 yr old earth... Is this correct? I personaly feel there is much in the old testament that is simply no longer applicable... how do you feel about it? in particular i am concerned with issues like slavery (exodus 21:7 says its ok to sell my daughter into slavery. Levidicus 25:44 says is ok for me to buy slaves only if thier from my another nation), but even more mudane issues like it being forbiddin to wher clothing from 2 types of material or planting multi crops...(Lev. 19:19). i feel the OT is based in a specific socio-culteral context that we no longer live... however those who take it as what it claims to be (the infallibal word of God) are sometimes unsure how passages such as these should be interpreted. If you feel this way i would like to know how you feel about these passages.Cheers Mate: CodyP

infallibal hey? so in exodus 21:7 the bible says its ok to sell my daughter into slavery. Levidicus 25:44 says is ok for me to buy slaves only if thier from my another nation..i think id like to own some american slaves but sadly your country has decided to go against the word of god in denying me that infallibal right. what happened to stoneing people to death who blaspheme - leviticus 24:10-16. And please check these passeges for yourself! There is something seriously wrong with this picture.

hey donnie,im gald we have moved over here, thatguy is a bit of a fundie, i prefer a more flexibal discussion.i think you stated it yourself and it basiclly sums my idea... the child must be taught that the lie is wrong. the inherent "spiritualy morality" is absent in the unsocalised, in the animal, and is largley driven by "fleshly desire" and self intrest. i am by not means going to argue for the justification of lying, or killing, or other things which my own empathy is able to view as wrong. in another posting you refered this to the golden rule:do unto others. that is empathy at work. as a highly socialised and rational being i am able to understand others as i understand myself... through systems of socialisation i am taught these norms which i come to accept and understand. they need not be dictated from the mount,(although that particular sermon is beautiful) they already exist within the group.i'd also like to address you point about killing vrs murder as it is a tough one. essentially i see little difference, the synonom the basically the takeing of life from another. however it seems you are looking at the issue of intent behind action, and thus it become a matter of circumstance and degree. does this mean that m/k can be justified? it pains me to say it but yes i think it can, however although one can feel a personal sence of justification in such action (ie vengence) the various subjective viewpoints will always disagree. its never easy being an absolutist. im canadain and we do not have the death penelty here, but in some ways i feel that there are those who by transgressing the rights of others in serious ways themsleves forfit thier own right to life... just a thoughcheers man
