While I find some of this discussion interesting I wonder what is the importance of this forecasting. I know there are many ideas in the mix with the rapid development of technology and the potential of more open communites but limiting the trajectory by calling this a “prediction” seems very conservative and limiting.
I guess this note might be more for the editor than Professor Shirky because in the talk there is not any mention of “prediction” in his talk.
What I would like to see more of is that instead of defining where we are going to, look where we came from. Gazing into the future can be interesting and inspirational but we need to staying open to what comes instead of creating predictions that can create an unnecessary path.
