Carolyn Allen commented on John McCain: Who really has the power in Washington? on September 30, 2008, 7:08 PM
I thought the essence of America's strength is distributed power -- not ONE powerful person. Military discipline supports a hierarchical leadership style, and maybe we need to remember the danger of a military approach as our freedoms are being eroded by concentrated power in the administrative branch. We haven't had a democracy for many many decades. We now have an endangered "republic"...what's next?

I agree that the legislation mentioned did happen during the Bush administration, but on the flip side are all the regulations that were undone, such as taking wildlife off endangered lists, leveling mountains for coal mining, not joining the global Kyoto Accords movement, etc. Congress and the administration share responsibility for our current dependence on non-renewable resources, but the vision came from our "imperial presidency." My hope is that science and environmental researchers regain their voice and legitimate ground in the coming months.

How do you share your extraordinary wisdom with the neighbors on your street? If you do, maybe those same techniques will work across the world. If you don't ... why not? Maybe the same reason holds in the long distance application of your superiority to other people's lives. You think maybe? I believe it starts with relationships...and respect...not superiority. Didn't we learn anything from the religious zealots that traveled the world imposing their idealogy on inferior people? And now, with global climate change resulting from our intelligent greed and science and industry...maybe we recognize that less is better in many cases. Maybe THEY are more sustainable than WE.

Intriguing observations -- industrial war, carbon age and interactivity as one species. I would add engineered genetics and emotion driven society. Good to think about the big picture occasionally!
