This was a very nuanced and informative discourse. I left with a "bigger" understanding of the subject and a greater respect for the man. This is exactly what I hope to find on your site that is rare elsewhere. Good Job!
Bruce Williams commented on Does public opinion influence your decisions as a judge? on January 12, 2008, 5:00 PM
I wish the Supreme Court would listen to public opinion more, like when we voted for Gore and they gave it to Bush. Or when Scalia went duck-hunting with the Vice-President and ruled that the Vice-President is "special" in regards to the Freedom of Information Act, contary to past rulings. That the Supreme Court is above politics ranks right up there with Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. That said, he did a good job of promoting an ideal. I wish the ideal was reflected more in reality. The current Court has done more damage than good to the bonds of trust between the Court and people, an issue he touched on, but did not address.
Bruce Williams commented on Do the rich have a responsibility to the poor? on January 12, 2008, 4:06 PM
There is a big difference when you stop thinking about hand-outs and start thinking about "good investments". Education is a good investment. Community Development is a good investment. Infrastructure is a good investment. Early childhood medical care is a good investment. Keeping people from becoming homeless is a good investment. If the payback ( dollars and cents ) is much greater than the investment, it is not a handout, it is the wise use of resources. Letting things go to hell and then picking up the pieces is never cheap.
Bruce Williams commented on Mitt Romney: The Principles of Mormonism on January 12, 2008, 1:16 PM
Pundits say being a Mormon is a liability for Romney. Romney being a Mormon is a liability for the Mormons, if you ask me. The Mormons I have met tend to be honest, decent, sincere people. He is a poor example of a Mormon.
