I agree entirely with you. Currently I am saving up to convert my 88 firebird into a fully electic vehicle but the only problem is the batteries. On the current most affordable batteries (for me) I would only be able to travel approxamitly 70Km and that is the main reason people don't want electric cars yet.

Right on, the batteries are the biggest problem. If we get a nice battery technology breakthru, this will all make much more sense. Until then electric cars are made light as possible to conserve energy. An 88 Firebird is a heavy car, I suspect you’d have to lighten it up wherever you can.
