What will happen to the gaseous planets in our solar system in ~5 billion years?

If/when our star becomes a red-type, what will happen to the gas giants in our solar system? Will the change in the (type? and) amount of energy change them?If so, what are some of the possibilities? … Read More

The universe is vast; how long until humans can physically go to another star?

(advancements in technology aside) Recently, astronomers from Middlebury College discovered one of the fastest-moving large objects ever observed, designated RX J0822-4300. They calculated the neutron star is moving about 3 million miles per hour and has already traveled 20 light years. "It's so far away that the apparent motion we see in five years is less than the height of the numerals in the date on a penny, seen from the length of a football field," said Frank Winkler. Since light moves at about 671 million miles per hour, the star is traveling at slightly under one-half of 1 percent of light speed. It would take the star 20 million years to cross our galaxy from one end to the other, another 350 million years to reach the next-closest galaxy to ours.Observation of this star tells us it is physically possible to accelerate a very heavy object to a measurable fraction of light speed; some physicists had contended that might always be impossible. So let's suppose humanity someday builds a spaceship capable of one-half of 1 percent of light speed. A ship moving at half of 1 percent of the speed of light could reach Mars in about 10 hours and be at Saturn in about a day, but would still be a rowboat compared with cosmic distances -- requiring 800 years to reach the nearest star to our sun and 6 million years to reach the galactic center.   -Gregg Easterbrook  … Read More

Interesting points, veralynns. I definitely agree that men can be good at hiding their vulgarity when around women, as well as that people are crazy and not all men are pigs (hence why I indicated I was knowingly making a generalization ).However, I can't get behind your insult theory. I would imagine most men use insults with each other since, as you stated, men are naturally vulgar. I can't imagine anyone likes to be insulted. I would imagine males act in this manner since men have always in competition with each other, and one tactic is attempting to get under the skin of your competition. Also, I find men are more likely to relate to a sophomoric sense of humor. Finally, when I insult my male friends, it's not because I'm secretly being intimate with them - I'm insulting them because they just did something stupid or I'm doing so in an obvious facetious manner just to make them laugh. I don't insult my friends as a code - I either mean what I say or make it obvious that I'm joking.

Women are crazy, men are pigs

I have a running generalization theory that "all" men are pigs and "all" women are crazy.  It seems that women generally agree with this theory, so long as the admission is there that - in general - all men are pigs. … Read More

Come on -- let's try some civility people!!!I don't think those stats are right either, but instead of insulting the writer I'm just going to ask her the following: TRUTH - What source did you get your numbers from?If there's a response, I'll learn more about the source. If there's no response (much more likely, I believe) then everyone who reads the post from now on will know she just made it up and it's pointless to debate any further.
