What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

Mystery Volcano Photo #38

Masaya-volcono

As we head off into the weekend, I thought I'd put up a new Mystery Volcano Photo. If you remember the last one, it was a doozy submitted by my former introductory geology student Daphne. It took quite a few guesses before Manuela correctly identified it as Masaya (top left) in Nicaragua (although ...

I fully realize I tend to have a bias towards explosive eruptions - I mean, it is hard to ignore something like this. However, that doesn't mean I should have neglected all the action going on right now in Hawai`i, where basalt lavas are doing that effusive thing they do so well.  The lava lake ...

It is June and it will be 95 here in Ohio tomorrow, so I guess summer is here. Coming part and parcel with summer comes my usual odd schedule, so I thought I'd give you all a heads up to what is coming for the next few months - and some special features to which you can look forward. First off ...

Moderate ash plume at Mexico's Popocatépetl

A lot of volcanoes produce 3-km ash plumes on the regular basis. Right now, there are probably two or three volcanoes in Kamchatka or Indonesia alone that are generating plumes of that size or larger - but those volcanoes are not looming over a population center like Mexico City. That is why every ...

I'll be posting my summer schedule soon - it is a busy summer for me this year for a number of reasons (as you'll see). So, to keep things interesting, I'll be bringing back a number of Eruptions features, the first being Volcano Profiles. We haven't had a Volcano Profile in a while, but if you ...
