What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

I'm putting up a post tomorrow about writing and the creative process, but on this crisp fall morning, I've been thinking more about the social aspect of the profession. Although this blog gets thousands of visitors, only a tiny fraction of them ever comment. I understand why that is, and I ...

The big news this week, as well it should be, was a new survey from Pew showing that America's religious "nones" continue their demographic ascent: The number of Americans who do not identify with any religion continues to grow at a rapid pace. One-fifth of the U.S. public – and a third of ...

Some links gathered over the week for you to peruse: • Ed Miliband, the leader of the UK's opposition Labour party, is a nonbeliever. He says he doesn't hold religious faith, but rather a faith in human progress. This column by Fraser Nelson admits that this may be a smart move in increasingly ...

My latest article for Salon has just been published, "Atheism's growing pains". It's a brief survey and distillation of the Atheism Plus movement: what it is, why it was needed, and what we hope to accomplish with it. I'm very glad to be able to bring these arguments to a new audience! Read the ...

It's just a few weeks until the U.S. presidential election, and while nothing is set in stone, Mitt Romney's hopes are looking increasingly dim. Despite the depressed economy, which would normally mean an easy win for the challenger, this election has taken a different course. Romney's electoral ...

The Continuing Battle Over Blasphemy Laws

Burnedbook

I'm surprised to still be writing about blasphemy laws, but it seems the idea just won't die. At the United Nations this week, the elected leaders of newly democratic Egypt and Yemen called for restrictions on free speech, in addition to similar demands from Turkey and other Islamic-majority ...

German Catholics, It's Time to Quit the Church

Saintpeterssquare

I've been writing a lot lately about reasons to quit the Catholic church, and judging by the demographic trends in many Western countries, there are a lot of people whose thinking runs along similar lines. I didn't think the church would ever deign to acknowledge its apostates, but it appears that ...

See You at Skepticon!

Just a brief announcement: The weekend of November 9, I'll be in Springfield, Missouri for Skepticon 5. Since I had such a blast at Skepticon 4 last year, there's no way I couldn't go back. And though I don't want to reveal any spoilers, there's a distinct possibility that I'm not just going to be ...
