What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

Because I'm An Atheist...

Faithvsreason

This post was originally written for the "Because I Am An Atheist" series at The Crommunist Manifesto. Thanks to Crommunist for the inspiration! Because I am an atheist, I don't have to spend my energy justifying the unjustifiable. As I've written before, I can imagine how I could have been a ...

Take a Bow, America

Today's breaking news was, of course, that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as "Obamacare". In what will doubtless go down in American history as a "Dewey Defeats Truman" moment, both CNN and Fox incorrectly stated initially that the law had been struck ...

Today's Reasons to Quit the Catholic Church

Vaticancity1

Over the last few years, it's become increasingly clear that there's no longer any place in Roman Catholicism for any but the most conservative and doctrinaire members. The signs of a top-down ideological cleansing are too obvious to ignore, including the Vatican hierarchy's using the Eucharist as ...

Daylight Atheism: The Book

Dacoverdesign

Longtime readers of this blog may remember that I wrote a book some time ago. What happened to it is something I've only alluded to a few times. Suffice to say that the full story could be a book in itself: an epic tale with more delays, false starts, and reversals of fortune than I care to ...

So, I know I've got at least a few readers who live in the U.K. Any of you interested in an in-person meetup? Later this summer, I'm going on a trip to England and Scotland. I'm arriving in London on Saturday, August 25. I plan to be there through that Tuesday, and then on Wednesday, August 29 ...

On Getting Through the Dry Spells

Drought

If you ask anyone who knows me, I like to think they'd tell you that I'm a generally optimistic and cheerful person. But these past few weeks, I've felt like I've been going through a dry spell. I've been restless, gloomy, and much more irritable and pessimistic than usual. No matter where I ...

The Millennials: America's Secular Future

I had a run-in with an old adversary lately, and after I've sent him on his way, I always feel compelled to point out some of the hopeful things he never mentions. This post is about one of those things. In recent posts, I've expressed my disillusionment with the Democrats. But whatever the ...

My Questions for Leah Libresco

As you may be aware, Leah Libresco at Unequally Yoked had a startling announcement yesterday: she's converting to Catholicism. I have to admit, though others will no doubt chastise me for missing obvious-in-retrospect clues, that this was something I didn't see coming at all. As recently as March ...

A Dialogue with the Tempter

At the end of a long and weary day, with the last drops of twilight bleeding out of the darkening midsummer sky, I turned my key in the lock of my front door. I set my bags down, stepped inside... and paused, one foot on the threshold. I was certain I had shut off all the lights before leaving that ...

Netroots Nation: Obama and the Liberals

One of the things that most struck me at the Netroots Nation conference last week was how surprisingly little of a presence the Obama reelection campaign had there. (Michelle Goldberg noticed this too.) Organizing for America sponsored a party and sent some staffers, but nothing made them stand out ...

SSA Week is ongoing, as atheist bloggers come together to raise money for the Secular Student Alliance. At the time this post was published, they've collectively raised $61,250 out of a goal of $100,000. (Hmm. Didn't I write yesterday that the total amount was over $65,000? Either it's somehow ...
