I took econ courses in college a decade ago and learned about “negative externalities” and the Tragedy of the Commons.  What has the Dean’s role in the business world been?  Why are these rules of business about sustainability suddenly new?  The realization that we have limited resources obviously is not new and the idea that we have crossed some intellectual frontier in the business world is an insult to my intelligence.  The only change that’s taken place is that sustainability is now a profitable pursuit by countries that have energy efficient technologies and enough double-speak hypocracy to say that India and China, which the dean (incorrectly) says are “financially pretty well off”, must take responsibility for environmental problems they did not create.

Getting an MBA is something I’ve gone back and forth on a lot lately and it’s interesting to see the reactions to the commentary of these B-School deans and their thoughts on today’s business sustainability. In a time where entrepreneurship is such an encouraged path, I have to wonder about an MBA’s merits. Maybe Big Think can do a topic on that.
