Competition is healthy in the marketplace, and in the area of search it is no different. But times are changing where people are getting their news and interests served from social networks. I suspect this trend will continue and all of the search engines will be bumped down the list of importance to some degree.

Many social welfare systems are founded on the principal of the working paying for those not working - whether it be for disability or unemployment. Look at social security, which is described as an entitlement program but is social welfare when you look at it closely. Social security is the largest legal ponzi scheme in the world. And like other ponzi schemes, it shall collapse from its own weight. The same will happen across the world, just as David noted, because the rate at which the population is growing it is unable to sustain such social welfare programs.

If you live in Cleveland, Ohio, you certainly do not want to bring the local level of government up to the state or federal levels. Many of the politicians in the City of Cleveland, and the county of Cuyahoga, are under investigation for a variety of charges. Two elected County politicians have resigned, as well as a school board member, and more will certainly follow. Maybe it is time to replace representation with online voting of each and every bill, ammendment, law, etc. At least then the people's voice would be heard and not be skewed by self serving politicians.
