My uncle was a family doctor and had a practice for 50 years. I remember him saying this “If you don’t use it, you lose it!” He had elderly patients buy sneakers and walk around their dining room tables twenty times a day! Whenever anyone asked him about certain foods and diets or an exercise program he always said " Everything in moderation is the best way to go." He gave prescriptions when needed, and sometimes said a drug wouldn’t help and had you do something else- like send you to a physical therapist or a psychologist. He believed in listening to people and basing his treatment partially on what they told him. He was always reading and walking and socializing; and working until the age of 80 He lived to the age of 88 and was healthy until the very end.
