What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

5 Smart Tumblrs to Follow Now

May 20, 2013, 12:07 PM

David Karp just became a lot wealthier and Yahoo became a lot hipper. And we became a lot more interested in Tumblr, the microblogging and social networking platform that Yahoo bought for over $1 billion.

For the uninitiated, we have compiled a short list of Tumblrs that are worth checking out. Please share your own recommendations with the Big Think community.

1. Anthony De Rosa

In 2011, The New York Times declared Anthony De Rosa "the undisputed king of Tumblr." Both on Twitter and Tumblr, the Thompson Reuters social media manager built a large following as a reliable source for breaking news.

2. It's Okay To Be Smart

Maria Popova gave the PBS host and writer Joe Hanson this endorsement: "Everyone's favorite Feynman of the Tumblr era." In addition to posting PBS episode extras, Hanson makes science book recommendations "from brains to biology to space to art to physics."

3. The Only Magic Left Is Art

Tumblr is kind to the image, and "The Only Magic Left Is Art" has been kind to artists. This curated online art gallery celebrates the "era of 'artistic equality' among the creative stratosphere."

4. CWL

If you love all things science, the cosmos, and Carl Sagan, then Kenny is your man on Tumblr. Kenny is studying to become a conceptual artist for NASA.
