Simply: we've been on a perpetual war footing for decades. The Shah of Iran was an instrument of "the west", a minority was empowered in Lebanon by machinations from "the west", such as Saddam Hussein were empowered by "the west" while such as Allende were handed over to fascists like Pinochet despite having been democratically elected. The Taliban gets all the rhetorical ammunition they need by consulting history. "Manifest destiny" ... oligarchs proceeding as warring gods.

... Germany and Japan became great powers by playing according to the rules of 1945. Is that not what terrorists are attacking? Taliban in Afghanistan attack our troops when they are protecting road builders. And in Pakistan they destroy schools by the dozen. This, I suggest, is paradigmatic of how those "1945 rules" are under attack.

... a lucid and valid opinion is neither if they disagree with it. @FrancisWandell, what part of this seems thoughtless or mindless to you? "I think that there’s an enormous amount that this administration has done that has violated our Constitution, that has made us less safe" She's "totally focused on destroying America"? Seems to me you're a prime example of that. Perhaps you could contend with what she actually said rather than those voices in your head.
