I feel that Ms. Ali evades the question of the need or uses for faith. Is our mind structure such that faith must exist, or is it merely an unkilled meme that binds us. My children are not faith-based, and they function. They also do not feel the need to kill people for faith reasons, like Jews, Christians and Muslims. Could Ms. Ali address that optimistic possibility, that we can live without faith at all?

There is no difference between religion and cultures. The tribal influence can be mixed with religion and take on a religious overtone, but ultimately it is man that acts against those he perceives to be different.

Those who see the need to include other cultures in dialog will always be those of hope. There is a place for religion in the world, especially as you will never be able to outlaw it by law, or for that matter, even enforce it.

There desperately needs to be a differentiation between religion and culture. It is culture and politics that has created an "us vs. them" mentality which ultimately becomes racism and violence. If you look at the core beliefs of all religions they all speak of peace. Religion has been a pawn in wars that were based on "otherness". The Muslim world needs to focus on working on common positive values with all other people on the planet, regardless of religion. We all want freedom of religion, the best for our children, to feed the poor, to help those in need. These are Islamic, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Athiest, etc. values. Let's concentrate on that rather than what clothes we where. In the end, if you are so inclined to believe, we all have to answer to God for what we do. So we should all just try to do our best.
