From our experience of poverty in India we can say that its elimination is possible only if the poor themselves make efforts to come out of it.It does not suit the leaders to bring the vast majority out of the morass of poverty and they therefore make the most efforts to keep the poor perpetually in a state of poverty by effectively keeping them in darkness and ignorance. The poor are given their anodynes of political power , the power flowing out of their votes which again are manipulated to the advantage of the elite sections of the people who provide leadership. The only way out is for the deprived sections to rise in rebellion and/or improve levels of literacy among their ranks which will make exploitation impossible and use their votes to continually destabilise the political system in order to keep the political leaders in a state of uncertainty.
