Without religion would there be societal decay? Without a scaffold for our ethics provided by religious traditions would we be morally adrift? Surely our morals gave birth to the scaffold that religion provides and in turn that scaffold influenced our morals and ethics.

Evolution has made us naturally tuned to do good as we naturally feel that our good deeds will be returned likewise. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. For this reason I believe that without religion we would continue as is.

Leaving a belief in God alone. A belief in God could still be held, but is it possible that without religion our morals and ethics would continue as they are and be a move towards peace because of an absence of religion?
