A spy satellite is due to fall from a degrading orbit during the next month, and, apparently is going to be allowed to disintegrate in the earth's atmosphere, although it is anticipated that pieces of it may actually survive to strike the surface of our planet. If this is the best our government can do to protect us from falling man-made objects, what protection can we expect from a Missile Defense Shield, or an impending asteroid impact? One would think that the such technology, if it does exist, could be effectively tested on this satellite, to see if it's worth the billions we've spent on it.
