Oceans are to 2009 what the hole in the ozone was in 1995. Habitat for billions of aquatic species, a massive carbon seep, and regulator of the earth's climate, oceans are indispenable to man's and every other species' future. As Worldchanging put it in a recent article, "if the oceans crash, we crash."
Vice Television recently completed their latest swashbuckling foray into hipster reportage with a visit to the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where ocean currents converge to create a Texas-sized floating landfill in the North Pacific. Household plastics make up most of it. Catch the (highly recommended) Vice series, follow the story at Worldchanging and debate what should be done about man's impact on the seas at Big Think.
