NASA's Earth Observatory detected a slab of ice 21 miles by 12 miles, or about the size of Singapore, floating in Pine Island Bay, south-west of Chile.
While a crack was found to have cut completely across a front part of Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier in July, the iceberg, named B-31, has only recently started moving away from the coast. Scientists are using satellites to track its movement to see if B-31 might enter shipping lanes.
